Ideal’s Long Thread Gage History

A Thread Grind Machinist at N.A. Woodward Co. (later Southern Gage Co.), Wally Gustaitis founded Ideal Gage in Culver City, CA in 1955. Ideal quickly became known as the fixed limit gage supplier thread manufacturing companies turned to when they needed high quality thread ring gages and threaded plug gages. The thread gage market was growing quickly so the shop moved to larger quarters in Gardena, incorporating in 1978

In 1982, Wally retired and sold the business to his son, Bud Krause. Bud, an associate engineer in ASME and a member of AMTMA (American Measuring Tool Manufacturing Association), continues today (in Wally’s tradition) to direct the company toward higher quality levels and fixed limit gage manufacturing proficiency.

Needing to accommodate an ever-growing stock of thread ring gages and threaded plug gages, Ideal Gage moved to its current location in 2006. Today the staff exceeds 90 years of thread gage experience. Not resting on our laurels, we regularly participate in “round-robin” inspection studies and thread gage training. This continuous improvement helps us maintain our high quality standards.

Pre-engineering all incoming orders to check for customer errors is standard practice at Ideal Gage. We regularly give advice to customers on their thread ring gage or threaded plug gage specifications and threading techniques, including tooling, drill and tap size, and plating allowances.

Our extensive fixed limit gage experience led us to becoming a distributor for STETFS (Screw Thread Engineering to Federal Standards) Software. This easy- to-use Screw Thread Design Software is backed up by Ideal Thread’s training program for Engineering and Quality persons.
